生活在北冰洋里的哺乳动物有与众不同的保暖方陪。例如，一只海獭的身上竟生有8亿根毛，而一只海狗的身上每平方厘米则有46 000根毛。它们身上的毛如此之密，以至于连无孔不入的海水也无法渗透进去。在这些浓密的毛发之中充满着干燥而温暖的空气，使它们即使在冰冷的海水之中，也能生活得非常舒服。
海豹、海象和鲸等大型海洋哺乳动物有一个共同的特点，即它们的体型都呈圆形，像个炮弹似的，这不仅使它们在游动时大大地减少阻力，而且也有效地减少了热量的散失。当然，它们之所以能在冰冷的海水中保持住自己40℃左右的体温，主要还是得益于极厚的皮层和皮下那层厚厚的脂肪。不同种类的鲸，其皮下脂肪的厚度是不一样的，有的只有几厘米，有的厚达半米，起到了很好的隔热作用。然而，有其利则必有其弊，当鲸鱼长时间的游动或者遇到危险拼命逃跑时，其身体内产生的大量热量就很难散发出去。为了解决这一问题，在其皮层表面以下分布着一个密密麻麻的血管网络，由神经和肌肉加以控制。当其过热时，大量热血就会流进这个网络中加以冷却，使体温降到3℃左右，其作用就像汽车的散热片差不多。
在北极，连小小的旅鼠也有其绝招。在严寒的冬季，它们是靠地道战求生存的。但是，要在冻土打出四通八达的地道网并非一件容易的事，因此每到秋天，旅鼠的前爪就会长出一个厚厚的角质层，就像是两把小铲子似的，打起洞来就要快得多了。
狐狸、狼、麝牛和北极熊等大型动物主要是靠丰厚的绒毛和不停地运动来保持体温并抵御寒冷的。北极熊虽然有时候也会冬眠，但却不是抱头大睡，而是睁一只眼，闭一只眼，保持着高度警惕，只要稍有风吹草动，它们会立刻觉醒，随时准备出击。
