那时，在梅树村里，电视机是很稀奇的东西，整个村里只有村尾肖大婶家里有台黑白电视机，总有人趴在她家窗户下，蹭着看会儿电视，但总被肖大婶呵斥着赶走。热心肠的小林看不过去，他用积蓄买了台彩色电视机，让村民免费去他家看电视。渐渐地，小林家里热闹了起来。
一个月后，小林去交电费，看到电费单时，他愣住了，电费多了九十多元。但小林一咬牙，没和村民们说。
这一切，村民们可都看在眼里了。这不,卖水果的隔三差五就送些梨给小林，卖烤鸭的时不时送来半只烤鸭一瓶黄酒，卖杂货的每隔几天就送些日用品来……
小林算了一下，村民们送的东西的价值远多于电费，他很过意不去，便对村民们说：
“如果大伙执意要送我东西，不如每人交六七块钱，这样就差不多抵上多出的电费了。”大伙听了，却一句话也没回应。
第二天，小林回到家，见一个人也没有，走出门一望,才发现大伙都在村尾，直勾勾地盯着那台黑白电视机……
