Dear David:
I am afraid that you will think me unpardonably negligent in not having answered your letter dated 7, December sooner, but when I have told you the reason, I trust you will be convinced that the neglect was excusable. When your letter arrived, I was just in Hong Kong. As my family could not forward it to me during my absence, it has been, therefore, lying on my desk until the moment when I took it up. Now the first thing I have to hasten to do is to write to you these few lines to express my deep regret.
I enjoyed many pleasant sights during my trip. I shall be pleased to give you an account to of them when I see you next.

一直都很喜欢“城”这个词，总让我想到那些或古朴，过华丽，或宏伟的建筑，让人沉静，让人惊叹或让人荡气回肠。还有那些各处特有的人文风情，在历史中舞着各自灵动的色彩。
所以很爱巴黎，以为那里有很多有名的建筑。其实我从不在乎它们已被千万人观赏，即便是为了经济。这并不有辱它们什么。因为美丽的依然美丽。
有人说，巴黎是奢华的。我也不否认，可奢华自有奢华的浪漫。巴黎的奢华不是纯粹的败家浪费，而是一种对艺术生活的不吝。以前看一本时尚杂志，说美国女人的衣服与法国女人的衣服，不用我说，大家可以猜到，前者比后者多得多，可是后者的价钱却让几乎每个美国女人咋舌。当然这里说的不是价钱问题，而是巴黎时尚概念中的“宁缺毋滥”，所以所有的也便成为必有的，精品的。就像那里的建筑――圣母院，埃菲尔铁塔，甚至倒金字塔――这个在当地倍受争议的'东西。
巴黎让人沉醉，让人迷离，而让人震撼的景，我想最值得一提的是美国旧金山的金门大桥。只是在一张照片上的一瞥，那般的金光灿烂，那般的美仑美奂，就像建在云端，天地都成为她的陪衬，在金色的阳光中熠熠生辉，让人永生难忘。真正的大气磅礴，气吞山河。我甚至不敢去那个地方，怕那时拍这照片的摄影师高超的记忆才制造出的美丽，或者怕自己的身影会玷污了这风景。
如果说前两者都是生命中绚烂镜头的影射，那么那写安静的，恬淡的镜头，沉默的桥段又由什么来演绎？我不希望是那些所谓的古城，那么，是西藏的拉萨吧。
藏银在阳光下闪着银色的光芒，却并不耀眼，因为时光把历史的沧桑都锲刻在那些小而沉的饰物上，精致却朴实。
那布达拉宫曾经的管弦之盛，丝竹盈耳，歌舞的繁，如今都消逝了，只留下千年的矗立的身影，骄傲却安详。于是那风中猎猎作响的经幡，把这千年的故事都幻化为风中的舞蹈，轻声的叹息。这才是所谓的朴实，是历经沧桑繁华落尽之后的真淳与平静，毫不矫饰造作，置与阳光下，和谐与温暖。
那些梦中的城市与风景，愿你们美丽的依然美丽。
