为什么动物有各式各样的尾巴呢？它们的尾巴都是为了生存有利而生成的。
松鼠的尾巴可以让松鼠增加跳跃距离，而且很保险，只有极少数会有意外。松鼠下跳时会张开降落伞似的尾巴，起到平衡和缓冲作用。松鼠睡觉时，会把尾巴盖到身上，这样就像盖了一床被子，十分暖和。松鼠控制尾巴的摆动，以作交流的语言。
狐狸尾巴十分粗壮，毛发尤为蓬松。在冬季，狐狸把自己蜷缩起来，用像围巾的尾巴将自己裹住，可以保暖。狐狸是肉食动物，尾巴可以在它捕食时起到一定的帮助：在狐狸扑向猎物时，可以用尾巴迷惑敌人；狐狸逃跑时，会用尾巴“扫地”，不知不觉就将攻击家禽时留下的血迹“毁尸灭迹”了。
老虎的尾巴也有妙用：可以保持身体平衡。在与敌人搏斗时，老虎会用链条式的尾巴将敌人抽得晕头转向，再发出致命一击。夏天，老虎尾巴可以像牛尾巴那样赶蚊子，在很热的时候，老虎尾巴沾水就能散热。
也许你很奇怪，人为什么不长尾巴呢？科学家们已经有推测了：随着人类进化的发展，大脑越来越灵活，人的尾巴不但没有像松鼠、狐狸、老虎的尾巴那样有很好的作用，反而妨碍人类运动，所以尾巴就慢慢退化了。
