它的头大而圆，脸好似一个大爱心。那一双尖锐的眼睛添了猫头鹰不少神气。嘴壳好似一把小镰刀放在两眼中下部分，两只立挺的耳朵更是为猫头鹰的形象锦上添花。
猫头鹰是“夜行侠”，喜欢白天睡觉，夜晚出来捕食、活动。白天，猫头鹰没精打采地站在枝头休息。这时，它总是低下头，一只眼睁一只眼闭，单立着一条腿，每半个小时换另一条腿“站岗”。而到了夜晚，猫头鹰就分外活跃，两只小眼像灯泡一般，用尖锐的爪子来捕捉它的美食。
猫头鹰的主要食物是老鼠，所以它被称为“超级灭鼠王”，一年能捕捉田鼠1000只以上。猫头鹰的眼珠不能转动，但它的头能360度转动，这使它的视力范围非常宽广。猫头鹰的听觉也十分灵敏，能清晰地听到老鼠活动时的声音，甚至连老鼠咀嚼食物发出的声音也能听见。它的羽毛很软，飞行时不会发出任何声音，当飞近猎物时，猫头鹰会尖叫一声。田鼠还没反应过来，就已被猫头鹰牢牢地抓住带回鸟巢，成了猫头鹰的盘中美餐。
可有人认为猫头鹰是不祥之物。因为猫头鹰捕食会尖叫，迷信的人说夜晚听到这种声音是不吉利的，这根本是无稽之谈。
