??鸣惊人的楚庄王一鸣惊人比喻平时没有突出的表现，一下子做出惊人的成绩。
秦国打败晋国以后，一连十几年两国没有发生战事。可是南方的楚国却一天比一天强大，一心要跟中原的霸主晋国争夺地位。
公元前613年，楚成王的孙子楚庄王新即位，做了国君。晋国趁这个机会，把几个一向归附楚国的国家又拉了过去，订立盟约。楚国的大臣们很不服气，都向楚庄王提出要他出兵争霸权。
无奈楚庄王不听那一套，白天打猎，晚上喝酒，听音乐，什么国家大事，全不放在心上，就这样窝窝囊囊地过了三年。他知道大臣们对他的作为很不满意，还下了一道命令：谁要是敢劝谏，就判谁的死罪。
有个名叫伍举的大臣，实在看不过去，决心去见楚庄王。楚庄王正在那里寻欢作乐，听到伍举要见他，就把伍举召到面前，问：“你来干什么?”
伍举说：“有人让我猜个谜儿，我猜不着。大王是个聪明人，请您猜猜吧。”
楚庄王听说要他猜谜儿，觉得怪有意思，就笑着说：“你说出来听听。”
伍举说：“楚国山上，有一只大鸟，身披五彩，样子挺神气。可是一停三年，不飞也不叫，这是什么鸟?”
楚庄王心里明白伍举说的是谁。他说：“这可不是普通的鸟。这种鸟，不飞则已，一飞将要冲天;不鸣则已，一鸣将要惊人。你去吧，我已经明白了。”
过了一段时期，另一个大臣苏从看看楚庄王没有动静，又去劝说楚庄王。
楚庄王问他：“你难道不知道我下的禁令吗?”
苏从说：“我知道。只要大王能够听我的意见，我就是触犯了禁令，被判了死罪，也是心甘情愿的\'。”
楚庄王高兴地说：“你们都是真心为了国家好，我哪会不明白呢?”
打这以后，楚庄王决心改革政治，把一批奉承拍马的人撤了职，把敢于进谏的伍举、苏从提拔起来，帮助他处理国家大事;一面制造武器，操练兵马。当年，就收服了南方许多部落。第六年，打败了宋国。第八年，又打败了陆浑(在今河南嵩县东北的戎族，一直打到周都洛邑附近。
为了显示楚国的兵威，楚庄王在洛邑的郊外举行一次大检阅。
这一来，可把那个挂名的周天子吓坏了。他派一个大臣王孙满到郊外去慰劳楚军。
楚庄王和王孙满交谈的时候，楚庄王问起周王宫里藏着的九鼎大小轻重怎么样。九鼎是象征周王室权威的礼器。楚庄王问起九鼎，就是表示他有夺取周天子权力的野心。
王孙满是个善于应付的人。他劝说楚庄王：国家的强盛，主要靠德行服人，不必去打听鼎的轻重。楚庄王自己知道当时还没有灭掉周朝的条件，也就带兵回国了。
以后，楚庄王又请了一位楚国有名的隐士孙叔敖当令尹(楚国的国相。孙叔敖当了令尹以后，开垦荒地，挖掘河道，奖励生产。为了免除水灾旱灾，他还组织楚国人开辟河道，能灌溉成百万亩庄稼，每年多打了不少粮食。没几年工夫，楚国更加强大起来，先后平定了郑国和陈国的两次内乱，终于和中原霸主晋国冲突起来。
公元前597年，楚庄王率领大军攻打郑国，晋国派兵救郑。在邲地(今河南郑州市东和楚国发生了一次大战。晋国从来没有打过这么惨的败仗，人马死了一半，另一半逃到黄河边。船少人多，兵士争着渡河，许多人被挤到水里去了。掉到水里的人往船上爬，船上的兵士怕翻船，拿刀把往船上爬的兵士手指头都砍了下来。
有人劝楚庄王追上去，把晋军赶尽***绝。楚庄王说：“楚国自从城濮失败以来，一直抬不起头来。这回打了这么大的胜仗，总算洗刷了以前的耻辱，何必多***人呢?”
说着，立即下令收兵，让晋国的残兵逃了回去。
打那以后，这个一鸣惊人的楚庄王就成了霸主。
从齐桓公、晋文公、宋襄公、秦穆公到楚庄王，前前后后总共五个霸主。历史上通常称他们是“春秋五霸”。
