于是，诸葛亮请鲁肃借20只船，并叫他不要告诉周瑜，鲁肃答应了。
第一天，诸葛亮没有动静，第二天，直到第三天四更时诸葛亮请鲁肃去取箭，诸葛亮的船已经靠近曹军的`水寨，他叫船一字排开，又叫军士一边擂鼓一边呐喊。曹操看不清虚实，不敢派兵出动，只叫一万名兵将射箭。等船两边的草把子插满了箭时，曹操知道上当了，可诸葛亮的船已顺风顺水地驶出二十多里。
鲁肃见了周瑜，把借箭的经过告诉他，使他不得不自叹不如。
