终于有一天，这个年轻人脱下帽子，也向传教士道一声：“早安。”
好几年过去了，纳粹党上台执政。这一天，传教士与村中所有的人，被纳粹党集中起来，送往集中营。在下火车、列队前行的时候，有一个手拿指挥棒的指挥官，在前面挥动着棒子，叫道：“左，右。”被指向左边的是死路一条，被指向右边的则还有生还的机会。传教士的名字被这位指挥官点到了，他浑身颤抖，走上前去。当他无望地抬起头来，眼睛一下子和指挥官的眼睛相遇了。传教士习惯的脱口而出：“早安，米勒先生。”米勒先生虽然没有过多地表情变化，但仍禁不住还了一句问候：“早安。”声音低得只有他们两人才能听到。最后的结果是：传教士被指向了右边---意思是生还者。
