人一旦不存希望，生命也就休止。希望的具体表现就是欲，它形成具体的目标和实践的动力，而令自己乐于完成它，乐于实现它，从而缔造幸福的生活。在《唯识论》中说：“云何为欲？于所乐境希望为性，勤依为业。”
人的生活目标、意义和价值观念，都可以称为欲，它的特性就是希望。有了希望就会乐于行动，而且勤奋地振作起来。生活的丰富感，是从欲和希望中创造出来的。没有期待和希望，生活就会落空。心智消沉的人，大部分都由于看不出希望，或者他们给自己订了一个遥不可及的目标，以致希望落空。
我认为希望、现实、行动和成长是分不开的。也就是说，如果你想订一个目标，能激发乐观奋斗的勇气，就必须从上述四个因素着手，缺一不可。当景气不好时，就会有人失业，面对失业是痛苦的，是恐惧的，也是空虚的。因为他没有希望，没有目标，不知从何着手，眼看着身边的储蓄就要耗尽，这时，有些人采取消极的行动，堕落在赌场，或借酒浇愁，甚至在无聊空虚中闯下祸事。这样的人，显然不怀希望，而变得堕落。
反之，一个自我功能健全的人，会采取新行动，试探新的生活目标，他们采取积极的行动。有一位朋友告诉我，由于公司***，他失业了。有几天他待在家里，觉得无聊恐慌。正好朋友找他做义工，他想失业期间，闲着也是闲着，就到社团去做服务工作。服务工作结束的会上，他结识了一位企业负责人，给了他一份新的工作。因此我相信行动往往给人带来新的希望。
人们遇到困难时，习惯性的反应是采取消极态度，变得保守退缩，甚至逃避困难。于是把心力放在如何减少损失，或者心生退却，昧于现实，而不再抱着希望，努力发挥潜能。然而，积极的行动力量，才会让我们重燃新机，实现新的希望。
你很容易遇到一些自以为见过世面的人，在你抱着希望试图创新时，以老气横秋的口吻对你说：“奉劝你别做白日梦啦！实际一点的'好。”、“主意倒是很好，做了你就知道困难重重！”、“别浪费时间精力去冒那种险！”……
这些自以为是的人经常给人浇冷水，你要当心，他们往往把你希望的火焰浇熄。我倒不是要你恃才自傲，更不希望你刚愎自用，不听别人规劝；而是提醒你，希望的热情是生命之焰。没有它就没有勤奋乐观的动力。因此，建议你几个踏实的作法，让希望得以实现：
积极地行动以实现梦想。
步步为营，打好基础。
克服消极思想的作祟。
结缘、把握机会、力图发展。
无论你做什么事，一开始时不要被唱反调的人把信心击溃。请记住，信心是希望的膏油！在我们的周遭，唱反调和缺乏斗志的人太多，他们有足够的理由动摇你的信心，把你从跑道上拖下来。因此，你一旦有了真实具体的目标，就要培养毅力，愿望切忌被别人的口水融化，才能完成它，实践它。不过，你要把握一个要诀：每一个行动都必须认真踏实，从中不断获得和启示。
其次，不要心存侥幸，避免贪婪的心作怪，这会令你思考发生短路。如果你不是步步踏实，就容易掉入不切实际的赌注。常有年轻人问我，“怎么才能成为成功的作家？”我总是告诉他：一天一天地写下去，把你的观察、体验、智慧和情感，透过笔分享给读者。
世上好像没有一蹴可成的事，因此我很欣赏美国第三十任总统柯立兰这段话：“要勇往直前，只要有信心，必无难为事。才能不足为凭，世上多的是空有才能而一事无成的人；天赋不足为恃，腹内空空的天才随处可见；学历不足为傲，社会上也充斥着受过教育的败类。唯有毅力与决心，才是无所不能的。”
其三，希望的克星是消极。消极是什么？惯于推拖拉、不能及时面对问题的人是消极；诿过而不能自我检讨的人是消极；经常抱着不测之感的人是消极；把目标订得远不可及的人是消极；认为自己无能蠢材的人是消极；不能跟别人合作、互相砥砺的人也是消极；不知道随缘学习、向人请教的人更是消极。希望沉没于消极，痛苦的恶魔则藉消极而助虐。消极能制造问题，引发悲剧，孕育心理疾病。至于乐观，则能激发工作效率，实现怀抱中的目标和理想。
其四，我要指出，希望是可以分享的。家人一起分享希望，可以互相打气，结合力量，创造幸福家庭。企业体系里也是一样，企业家要有大格局的希望，要考虑员工的福利，要懂得分享共同的希望和愿景。这种让大家看到希望的一股热忱，能带动士气，发展合作意愿，创造共同生机，这就叫结缘。单打独斗的时代已成过去，共同努力和分享福祉的时代来临，生活态度最大改变莫甚于此。
我发现一些人对生活不抱希望，因为长期生活在挫折之中，活在遥不可及的目标，或者活在空想之中，他们自以为怀抱着希望，实际上那只是空想。真正的希望必须是现实的延伸，是一步步往前走的路，是不断为美好的下一步作准备的实现。
