故宫位于北京市中心，也称“紫禁城”。这里曾经居住过24个皇帝，是明清两代的皇宫。
故宫占地72万平方米，建筑面积约15万平方米，共有殿宇8707间，都是砖木结构、黄琉璃瓦顶、青白石底座饰以金碧辉煌的彩绘，是世界上现存规模最大、最完整的古代皇家建筑群。
故宫四面环有高10米的城墙，城墙南北长961米，东西宽753米，城外有一条宽52米、长3800米的护城河环绕，构成完整的防卫系统。故宫总体布局为中轴对称，布局严谨，秩序井然，寸砖片瓦皆遵循着封建等级礼制，映现出帝王至高无上的权威。
故宫被誉为世界五大宫之一(北京故宫、法国凡尔赛宫、英国白金汉宫、美国白宫、俄罗斯克里姆林宫，并被联合国科教文组织列为“世界文化遗产”。紫禁城是中国五个多世纪以来的最高权力中心，它以园林景观和容纳了家具及工艺品的9000个房间的.庞大建筑群，成为明清时代中国文明无价的历史见证。
