佛来思节夫人支付着住院的一切费用，而那位临床的老人手头似乎渐渐拮据了，他太老了，也太穷了，没有能力支付医疗费用了。医院已经决定赶他出去。
一天，老头儿对佛来思节夫人说：“尊贵的夫人，您是不是需要一串项链呢？”佛来思节夫人没有应声，奇怪地看着他。“我想，我有一串钻石项链可以低价卖给您，我需要钱治病。”老头儿停顿了一会儿，“很漂亮的一串钻石项链，价值连城！”“哦不，不是偷的！”老头看见佛来思节夫人的眼神，连忙解释，好像犹豫了一会儿，“那是十年前的事了，我还是一个车夫，一位和您一样美丽的夫人把它掉在我的车里……我很惭愧……但我现在真的需要钱，你看……”
