张继科的父亲张传铭是岛城资深的专业乒乓球教练员。有趣的是，张传铭一开始并不希望张继科子承父业，对足球情有独钟的他原本想把儿子培养成足球运动员，之所以给儿子起名“继科”，是因为“白巫师”济科是他最喜欢的球星。
然而，中国男足1993年在世界杯预选赛中爆冷输给也门队，又一次没有“冲出亚洲，走向世界”，让张传铭失望透顶，他也因此改变了让张继科投身绿茵场的初衷。因为遗传了父亲的运动基因，天赋异禀的张继科第一次拿起乒乓球拍就爱不释手。
当时，张传铭在家里摆了一张乒乓球台，一有时间就教张继科打球。1995年，当7岁的张继科来到青岛第二体育场，师从启蒙教练申蓬华接受专业训练时，虽然反手技术尚显稚嫩，但正手技术已然有模有样。
在申蓬华看来，张继科能有今天的成就，是汗水浇灌的必然结果。每当踏上训练场，张继科都会心无旁骛，练起球来一丝不苟，不像有的孩子教练在时装模作样，教练不在时就趁机偷懒。一次，申蓬华偶然间指出张继科存在“左右摆速不够快”的弱点。言者无意，听者有心，那天下午，张继科专门找了一个小队员给自己发球，专练左右摆速。练完后，他找到申蓬华：“教练，你看我现在快不快?”这个细节令申蓬华印象深刻。
永不服输也是张继科登上世界之巅的关键。与其他小队员和大队员交手时抱着“小输即赢”的心态不同，张继科从不认为输给大队员是正常现象，反而会充分吸取失败教训，及时弥补差距。正是凭借这股初生牛犊不怕虎的劲头，张继科把成长路上的一块块“绊脚石”变成了“垫脚石”，逐渐在同龄人中出类拔萃。2003年，张继科勇夺世青赛男单冠军，藉此晋升至国家一队。
浪子回头金不换
自古英雄出少年。年仅15岁就进入国家一队，与孔令辉等偶像朝夕相处，彼时的张继科意气风发，甚至因此而目空一切。然而自古英雄也多磨难。2004年，张继科为自己的年少轻狂付出了惨重代价，因为违反队纪，他被退回山东队。
虽然深受打击，但张继科没有自暴自弃，而是很快振作精神。因为他深知，只要自己洗心革面，就一定能用出色的成绩再度敲开国家队的大门。那段时间，除了每天三练，张继科深居简出，就算是出门，也往往戴着一顶棒球帽，不想让别人认出他来。更令主管教练尹霄担忧的是，彼时的张继科沉默寡言，好像随时都会憋疯一样。
为了帮助弟子将心中的压抑情绪完全释放出来，一天，尹霄突然开车带着张继科来到训练馆的后山，从车上搬下来几十个瓷质盘子，以命令的口吻要求张继科：“把这些盘子都给我摔碎了!”见一头雾水的张继科有所迟疑，尹霄趁机因势利导：“你必须跟以前的自己彻底决裂，如果有决心，就一口气把它们都给我摔碎了!”在张继科把盘子一一摔碎后，尹霄还不算完，连续几天都带着他到后山摔盘子，直到张继科彻底走出这段阴影。
