长篇小说《我是猫》是夏目漱石的代表作。这部作品写于1904年至1906年9月，1905年1月起在《杜鹃》杂志上连载，不久，编成上、中、下三册出版。

（一）知识分子

以主人公苦沙弥为首的明治时期的知识分子，他们正直、善良，鄙视世俗、不与败坏的社会时尚同流合污。穷教师苦沙弥“从当学生起就讨厌资本家”。他大骂金田“算什么东西!”他把铃木的名片扔“在那个臭地方(厕所判处了无期徒刑”。他对金钱、资本家的仇恨甚至到“顽固不化”的程度。美学家迷亭机敏多智，锋芒毕露，一有机会便嘲讽金田、铃木，使他们陷入窘态。理学士寒月不慕时尚，没作财主金田家的乘龙快婿。

他们不满现实，揭露时弊，挖苦世俗，在他们尖刻、讥讽的语言中，却也表达了处在黑暗之中的人民愤懑的情绪。然而，他们又有着种种弱点，甚至不良的倾向——

苦沙弥愚拙、软弱、无能，不谙“世道”，他与金田斗争中，虽有“雄壮”的“架势”，但“一交锋就成了银样的枪”了。迷亭轻浮说谎，玩世不恭，还往往故弄玄虚、哗众取宠。哲学家独仙宣扬“心的修行”，用“大彻大悟”教诲大家，实则是一种戮害人们身心的毒剂。他们最大的弱点是胸无大志、无所事事；虽然自命清高，但是过着无聊、庸俗的生活。他们为了寻求精神刺激、填补生活的空虚，卖弄知识，故作风雅，嘲笑世俗。他们这种矛盾的生活状态和性格特点，正是当时一种既不满上层统治者又不与人民为伍的处在社会中间状态的中小资产阶级知识分子的典型写照。作者来自这个阶层，熟悉他们的生活习性和心理特征，因而在作品中真实地再现了他们的生活，有力地鞭挞和嘲笑了他们的弱点。在这种辛辣的讽刺背后，也隐藏着作者的苦闷和悲哀，作者说过：“比嘲笑他们我更嘲笑我自己，象我这样嘻笑怒骂是带有一种苦艾的余韵的。”

（二）资本家金田

作品巧妙地写进了邻家金田小姐的婚事引起的纠葛，并把它贯穿在作品始终。资本家金田的妻子为了选择女婿到苦沙弥家里打听理学士寒月的情况。苦沙弥有些傲慢，不大理睬她，于是招来了金田夫妇的肆意迫害：先是指使一伙人污辱谩骂；接着唆使苦沙弥的同事进行报复；以后又买通落云馆的顽皮学生闹得他不得安宁；最后还叫苦沙弥过去的同学对他进行规劝、恐吓。小说有力地揭露了资产阶级，批判了社会拜金主义风气。将金田的一付奸诈、凶狠可憎的面目暴露无遗了。所以，连“猫”也觉得金田是“最坏的人类”。

（三）小资本家铃木

作者笔下的小资本家铃木籐十郎，同样具有唯利是图、损人利己的丑恶本质。他的人生观是“要做资本家就得做个大的。”铃木与金田不同的个性是“圆转油滑”。“他以为一个人的事业，倘能不经劳神苦思，不经辩驳争论而获得开展的话，那也就是人生达到快乐的极致了”。铃木毕业之后，就是靠这种“极乐主义”获得成功，带上了金表，并成了“金田老爷的股肱”。他虽然是学子出身，但唯财是命，崇拜金钱，甘当金田老爷的走狗，毫无学友之情，两次来到苦沙弥家，作金田的暗探。铃木是典型的势利小人。
