数十年来，彭先觉不仅为中国的氢弹研制事业做出了卓越贡献，立下了汗马功劳，还极具创造性地提出了和平利用核能的宏大计划，并与时俱进，在传统的高碳能源难以为继、亟需新型清洁能源的当下，提出了聚变—裂变新型混合堆开发利用核能的方案。该混合堆一旦研制成功，将能够解决人类未来数千年的能源需求问题，意义重大。
艰辛成长路厚积薄发
彭先觉是我国著名的原子核物理学专家，曾任中国工程物理研究院（简称中物院）科技委主任。因研究工作功勋卓著，1999年当选为中国工程院能源与矿业工程学部院士。作为新中国自己培养出来的科学家，他科研功底扎实、治学严谨、勤于思考、善于创新、严于律己、乐于助人，是一位公认的优秀学术领头人。然而成功的背后，总是凝聚着艰辛与汗水，在彭先觉看来，他一系列辉煌成果的取得，是“八分汗水，二分天智”的结果。正如大发明家爱迪生所言：“天才是百分之一的灵感，百分之九十九的汗水。”彭先觉也不例外。
出生于解放前的彭先觉，成才之路是十分艰辛的。他的父亲彭思伏念过几年私塾，在那个年代贫穷落后的乡下，算得上是个小知识分子。他的母亲很贤惠，一生勤俭，持家有方。他的祖父彭昆裕也念过两年私塾，大革命时期参加过当地农民协会，对时局变迁较为关心。小先觉5岁时，祖父就教他读“三字经”，并经常给孙儿们讲古时候的小故事，小先觉经常听得入迷。那时，母亲对他管教很严，经常督促他读书、背书、写字。这样的童年教育对彭先觉一生的成长都有着重要的影响。
1950年秋，彭先觉就读于村办小学，三年后考上湘潭县一中。他一直走读上学。由于家庭经济困难，上课时间在学校读书，放学后和礼拜天必须帮家里干活。初中阶段听老师讲授中国近代史，激发了爱国热忱，他暗下决心，要学好本领，将来报效祖国，为国家富强和人民幸福出力。1956年，彭先觉考取本校高中，仍是走读生。当时学校推行勤工俭学制度，课堂教学减少了，但参加社会实践的机会较多。有一次，学校组织高中学生参加装运石灰劳动，将窑厂烧制的石灰用独轮车运到十几华里之外的河边装船；山路崎岖，每辆车装载着近300斤重的石灰，一天来回运送两趟，连续干了半个多月。这项劳动十分艰辛，坚持下来确实不易，但却锻炼了彭先觉的毅力和合作精神。
高中时，彭先觉开始对数学和物理产生兴趣，除课堂学习外，还经常阅读一些课外资料与参考书籍，重点学习各种解题方法，仔细琢磨解题思路，加深对各种物理现象的理解，务求融会贯通。1959年秋，彭先觉以优异成绩考取哈尔滨军事工程学院原子工程系。哈军工当时是国内首屈一指的重点军事工程高校，在其后的五年时间里，彭先觉在这里刻苦攻读，积累了深厚的学识。他为人朴实，头脑聪明，基础扎实，学习得法，性格合群，能团结同学，是系里品学兼优的尖子生。优良的知识储备和学习方法，为他日后参加工作时厚积薄发，取得一系列卓越成就奠定了坚实的`基础。
