关于藏戏还有一个众人皆知的传说。传说以前，有一个高僧叫做唐东杰布。那时候，雅鲁藏江上没有桥，百姓们都试图乘船过江，可都被咆哮的江水吞噬。于是，唐东杰布许下宏愿，发誓架桥，为民造福。一无所有的唐东杰布受到所有人的嘲笑。唐东杰布在山南琼结七位能歌善舞的姑娘，他们组成了西藏的第一个戏班子。他们到处表演故事和历史故事，劝人们行善积德，出钱出力，共同修桥。
他们以雄浑的歌声和感人的故事感动了人们，有的人献出钱财，有的人送来铁块，有的人送来粮食，更有大批的农民、工匠跟着他们修桥。就这样，身无分文的唐东杰布在雅鲁江上修了58座铁锁桥，也成为了藏戏的开山鼻祖。
