老虎的尾巴毛茸茸的，又粗又长，健壮有力。那粗壮的尾巴有一个尤为重要的功能——维持身体的平衡！凭借这粗壮的大伙伙老虎就可以在丛林中自由奔跑。它的尾巴长约0。6—0。9米，和大象一样，也可以用来赶走苍蝇、豺等讨厌的小动物。
袋鼠的尾巴不只粗长，而且长满肌肉。当袋鼠慢慢行走时，它的尾巴能起到“5、肢”有哪些用途；跳跃时，尾巴则向后伸直，用来平衡身体；遇见危险时，那尾巴就变成了自卫和进攻的“武器”，一旦敌手被它那强有力的尾巴击中，就会有致命的危险。
尾巴是猴子的“5、只手”。猴子借助尾巴在树上蹿来蹿去，有时还用尾巴攫取食物。比如白颊猴就可以借助尾巴帮站立，蜘蛛猴可以用尾巴摘取果实。
松鼠的尾巴又大又蓬松，它可以加强松鼠的跳跃距离，遇见凶猛动物时，可以帮自己飞速逃脱。松鼠从树上往下跳时，尾巴张开，像降落伞一样维持着身体的平衡，如此一来松鼠就可以平平安安地落到地面上。让大家没想到的是这条又厚又软的大尾巴还是松鼠过冬的利器，盖在身上那真是太暖和了！
鹿的尾巴又短又小，但它却是要紧的警报器。当天敌挨近鹿群时，第一发现危险的那只鹿就会竖起我们的尾巴，向同伴发出警报。

在现实生活中，虎的数量很少。在九种虎中，有四种已经灭绝了。仅剩下的五种虎中，也有几种的数量仅剩两位数了。但美洲虎，东北虎的踪迹，还是可以在森林中找到，还是一样的威风。
东北虎的毛色非常美丽，额前有一个“王”字形的斑纹，一身淡黄色的长毛上夹杂着黑色条纹，显得十分漂亮；它那强健、粗壮的四肢和一对炯炯有神的眼睛，又使它显得威风凛凛。东北虎是肉食性动物，它身上最厉害的武器就是锋利的爪和犬齿。它的爪长达十多厘米，伸缩自如，比钢刀还利，就是牛皮也禁不住它一抓；犬齿长6厘米，是撕碎猎物不可缺少的“餐刀”；虎的舌头上有很多尖锐的刺，适于嘶咬。趾垫和掌心的肉垫，像海绵似的柔软，使东北虎走起路来像猫一样，无声无息，敏捷而富有弹性。
所有种类的老虎几乎都有这些特点，这是它们身体条件上的优势，而它们的捕食本领也比狮子高明，常采取静伏、潜行，好搞突然袭击。它的一声长啸，会吓得许多动物伏地不动，然后使用扑、掀和剪等方法来捕捉。虎的一扑很厉害，能远扑七米之外，跃高2米，一掌可以击倒一只鹿。它的尾巴就像一条铁棍，“一剪”可以打断动物的腰和腿。它还有尖牙利爪，遇上牛这样的大家伙，就从后面跃上牛背，抓住头颈，前顶后扯；如果从正面袭击，就会抓住咽喉，连咬带撕，再壮的牛也只能任它宰割了。
虎在热带和寒温带森林中都有栖息，它耐寒超过耐热，喜欢洗澡，常常出没在离水较近的草丛之间。在饱餐之后，它们一般都比较喜欢在安静的地方休息。虎与狮不同，一般都在晨昏时才出来觅食，但是行动却十分隐蔽。
除母虎带仔外，绝大多数的虎都是单独栖居，并有明显的巢域。母虎一般两三年一胎，一胎一般二仔。由于森林日趋减少，素有“森林的保护者”美誉的老虎不但保护不了被人类不断吞噬的森林，连自身的生存也受到环境问题的严重严胁。目前，我国虎类总共只有3000多只。
由于虎的价值大，数量又少，这“森林”的雄姿已很难见到。目前东北虎和华南虎均已被列为我们国家的一类保护动物，相信经过社会各界人士不懈的努力，一定会使子孙后代们永远可以见到这百兽――虎的雄姿。
