晋朝初年，有个名叫满奋的人，长得身材高大魁梧，似乎体格十分健壮。其实满奋非常怕冷，遇到刮风下雨的天气，他总是穿得多多的，还缩着脖子笼着双手，恨不得整个人都缩到衣服里面去。他家里从深秋时候便生起炉子来烤火，一到冬天，他更是成天都坐在炉火边，能不出去就不出去。
一个深秋的早晨，夜里刚下过霜，屋顶的瓦片上，树的枝干上，都铺了厚厚的一层霜。狂风呼啸，黄叶在风中旋转、飞舞，寒意逼人，直侵入人的骨髓。
即位不久的晋武帝派人来宣召满奋马上入宫去议事。满奋忙不迭地穿上一件又一件厚衣服，一出府门就赶紧一头钻进了蒙着厚厚的轿帘的轿子中去了。
到了宫中，晋武帝让满奋在靠南的位置上坐下，然后就开始和他商谈朝政。说了一会儿话，晋武帝忽然发现满奋紧皱双眉，浑身打颤，嘴唇更是筛糠般抖得厉害，脸色也很不好看，就很关切地问他说：“你是不是身体不舒服？如果有什么病的话，就先回家去休息吧。”
满奋哆哆嗦嗦地指着北窗说道：“陛下，今天刮起了大风，臣觉得十分寒冷。”
晋武帝回过头来看了看北窗，北窗上面装的是玻璃屏，透过玻璃屏可以看见外面的树枝被风吹得摇晃得厉害，黄叶漫天飘飞，但是风却没有办法透进来。晋武帝不禁笑了起来，对满奋说；“那里装的是玻璃屏，外面就算风再大，也根本吹不进来，你怎么会觉得冷呢？”
满奋听了很不好意思，红着脸解释道：“臣听说南方一带的牛怕热，看到月亮也以为是太阳，于是就热得喘起气来。臣一向怕冷，看见树枝在寒风里摇晃就好像南方的牛见到月亮也会喘气一样感到寒冷无比，以至于会发起抖来，请陛下恕臣失礼。”
晋武帝听了这话，想了想觉得挺有道理，就没有怪罪满奋，又和他稍稍谈了一会儿话以后就让他回去了。
南方的牛看见月亮热得喘气和满奋见树枝摇晃冷得发抖都是一个道理：见到与某些印象极深的东西相关的事物就会产生条件反射，作出与见到前者相同的反应。可见我们在看到相似的现象时，不要只考虑表面现象就轻易下结论，而应该仔细地调查分析一番，才能够得出正确的结论来。
