如果不是老一辈残疾人乒乓球冠军们2000年在江苏邳州市“希望之家”残疾人学校的一次乒乓球表演，今天这一刻的冯攀峰会在哪里，做些什么，都不得而知。但那一天过后，10岁的他突然发现“原来残疾人是可以参加一些运动会，为国争光的”。
和同样因小儿麻痹症而身体残疾的同学一起，素来对乒乓球感兴趣的冯攀峰开始了训练。但十几年前训练条件堪忧，冬天没有暖气，轮椅运动员活动范围小，身上热不起来，轮椅又是铁圈，冬天的时候手要推着。“手脚都容易有冻疮，打的时候就流血，”他回忆起那段时光，“但大家一起练习都挺高兴的，就也没觉得有多苦。”
对那个时候的冯攀峰来说，对乒乓球只是喜欢，并没有想过以后要去拿什么冠军。但8年的光阴悄悄过去，他从省队到了国家队，并在北京残奥会上收获了男子3级单打冠军，2012年的伦敦也是如此，到今天，他实现了该项目残奥会的三连冠。
冯攀峰说，自己的偶像是邓亚萍，同样有着刚出道时不被人看好的经历，也有付出超越常人努力而向上登攀的人生轨迹——这一点很像他的名字。“所以我很崇拜她。” 冯攀峰说。不过现在大大小小的众多赛事冠军，已经让他和自己的偶像默默看齐。
但乒乓球给予冯攀峰的，不仅仅是奖杯与奖牌，更重要的是来自内心的变化。“残疾人，无论是参加体育运动还是上班、无业，我觉得最难克服的是一个心理问题，就是一种自卑感，这个是再怎么开导也开导不了的，”他说， “必须要经过一定时间的锻炼，拿到成绩之后觉得自己不比别人差，慢慢地我们的自信心就树立起来了，出去以后从来没觉得自己有什么不一样。”
当然他也会经历迷茫，这一次来里约，他一直努力想找回前两届的状态，两届冠军的过往本身也是一种莫大的压力。“决赛前就跟自己说，反正我进决赛了已经，就放开打吧。”今天每次关键得分，他都会怒吼着给自己加油，直到拿下冠军点之后高高地举起手臂庆祝。他说：“拿了之后就觉得，这一路，挺精彩。”
