猫是一种可爱的小动物，有家猫和野猫之分。早在3500多年前，就被人们驯养，但它可不像狗那样听话，猫总有点儿自己的小心思。
猫长得很可爱，身上的毛有长有短，不论长毛猫还是短毛猫，它身上的毛大致都可以分为三层——芒毛、底层被毛、护毛。大多数猫三层毛都有，也有一些猫不是三层毛都有，如柯尼斯卷毛猫，它们就没有护毛，它们的毛细腻而柔软，摸起来很舒服。猫的尾巴对猫来说很有用的，可以帮助猫保持平衡，特别是从高空落下来时尾巴的作用功不可没。猫的趾底有脂肪质肉垫，行走无声，捕鼠时绝不会吓跑老鼠；爪子能伸缩自如，为了防止磨钝，只有在捕鼠和攀爬时它才会把爪子伸出来。
猫行动敏捷，善跳跃，喜欢吃鱼和老鼠。猫是夜行动物，为了在夜间能看清东西，需要补充大量的牛磺酸，而老鼠和鱼体内都含有大量的牛磺酸，所以猫喜欢吃鱼和老鼠是满足自己夜间行动的需要。
猫看起来很贪睡，一天中有14—15个小时似乎都在睡眠中度过，被人们称之为“懒猫”，但其实它真正的睡眠时间只有4—5个小时。猫生性谨慎，你仔细观察就会发现，只要有人靠近，睡眠中猫的耳朵也能悄悄地竖起来，它其实并没有真正的睡着。
猫很任性，我行我素，是独行动物，不像狗那样，听主人的命令，有时它并不把主人放在眼里；有时也会像孩子一样向主人“撒娇”。

小金吃东西时，两腿一伸，趴在那吃东西，它的小嘴一直不停地在动，还不时发出“咔吧，咔吧。”的声音。它吃东西时，千万不能打扰它，入关你打扰它，它就会用他那尖尖的爪子抓你。吃完东西，它会把爪子弄湿，然后洗脸，然后两腿一伸，身子一侧，最后开始呼呼大睡。
它一整天几乎都在外面找吃的。有一次，我在床上看电视，小金一下子冲了出去，我以为它是走上厕所，就没在意，可过了一会，它回来了，但它的嘴里竟叼着一块鸡肉。于是我在一旁躲着，我想，它一定会再出去，果然不出我所料，它过了一会就又出去了，我就又出去了，我就悄悄跟了过去一会就又出去了，原来它在扒垃圾桶！然后，一冲了过去，小金好像发现我了，它连忙扔掉一块肉，撒腿就跑，我后面穷追不舍，直到它跑进了一个小树林里我才停下。
