我的家乡盛产羊只。其中最有名的是中卫细毛山羊。在每年的深秋或寒冬季节，将喂养了3年以上的体大膘肥的细毛山羊宰***后，煺去羊毛，割掉头、尾、蹄，然后将羊皮囫囵剥出。经有的皮匠用芒硝、黄米面等原料吧羊皮熟好，再用麦柴塞满皮囊，撑大羊皮，增加它的容积。每个皮囊有6个开口，1个羊脖，4个洋蹄，1个肛门。把5个开口用麻绳扎死，保留一个蹄子的开口
冥肥的细毛山羊宰系成活扣，作为充气口。为了使皮囊柔韧耐用，经常要从充气口装些盐水和香油。古时候，没有打气筒，给气囊充气是用口吹的。使用时，把充足了气的皮囊并排绑在木框上，使皮囊在下，木框在上，放在水中。羊皮筏只需一个人手执一根长2米左右的简易木桨掌握航向，再借助水的浮力，就可以用来渡河载物了。
羊皮筱一般只能对面摆渡或顺水而下，不能逆流上行，因为逆水上行时，需要人用绳子像拉纤那样去拉，不大合算。
用皮筏子运载货物，如果是短途，到下游卸掉货物后，一个人用肩膀就可以把皮筏再扛到上游：如果是长途载运，到达目的地后，就把木框卸掉。只把皮囊折叠起来，用扁担挑回原地。下次使用时，重新绑扎木框，捆上皮囊，就是一个新羊皮筏子了。
许多单筏还可连成一个大筏，沿黄河而下作长途运输。(范文网 特别是在交通不便的年代里，经常可见这种“联体皮筏”。如果把4只单筏连在一起运送煤炭，其载总量起码在5吨以上：联筏有时还用来装载体积大而易破碎的物品（如陶器、缸、坛），运行时既平稳又安全，既省工又省力。而且，划皮筏的4位师傅一点儿也不紧张，他们完全可以在水流平缓地段谈天论地。划着羊皮筏在黄河水面上运行的船夫们，时常悠然地引吭高歌，抒发那种除了他们自己谁也无法领略的闲情逸致。
羊皮筱不仅用料经济，制作简便，还具有其他水运工具不能代替的优点。
我的家乡中卫县位于黄土高原，黄河从中间穿流而过，流程114公里。由于地处黄河“前套”之首，上游黑山峡与下游胜金关的.落差就达80多米。黄河像脱缰的野马，恣意驰骋在黄土高原上，有时把两岸的土地冲开缺口，变为道道支流；有时又北塌南淤，形成小小滩岛。支流多，滩岛小，河床浅。用木船运行，既不好驾驶，又容易搁置浅滩。甚至出现船毁人亡的悲剧。所以，我们的祖先就发明了羊皮筏。羊皮筏的使用，沟通了甘肃兰州至内蒙古包头等地的水上航运。千百年来，黄河两岸的居民人来客往，行商贸易，都靠这羊皮筏子。上游驰名的冬果梨、香水梨、白兰瓜，当地产的红枣、枸杞、毛皮，优质的无烟煤、黑瓷器等名贵物产，都可以出河贩运。羊皮筏既繁荣了黄河两岸的经济，又便利了人民的生活。
