描写是把描写对象的状貌、情态描绘出来，再现给读者的一种表达方式。
作用：描写的手法运用得好，能逼真传神、生动形象，使读者如见其人、如闻其声、如临其境，从中受到强烈的艺术感染。
从描写的对象上分：人物描写、环境描写、场面描写、细节描写。
从描写的方法上分：正面描写、侧面描写。
我们需要着重了解的是人物描写和环境描写。人物描写又可分为肖像描写、动作描写、语言描写、心理描写等。
①肖像（外貌）描写
包括神态描写（描写人物容貌、衣着、神情、姿态等），它可以表现一个人的生存环境，如《卖炭翁》中的“两鬓苍苍十指黑”，可以看出卖炭翁生活艰难，比如说，一个人“衣衫褴褛，岁月在他脸上刻下了无情的皱纹。”可以看出这个人的生活比较操劳、艰辛；一个人“脑满肠肥，大腹便便”可以看得出这个人养尊处优，生活xx；一个人“纯净的眼神”可以看得出这个人心地纯净、无邪等。
作用：交代了人物的××身份、××地位、××处境、经历以及××心理状态、××思想性格等情况。
②语言（对话）描写
一个满嘴粗话和一个满嘴“之乎者也”的人必然是受到的教育程度不同，身份地位不同，前者可能是一个对生活满腹牢***，事事不顺利的人；后者可能是一个知识分子，略有些迂腐。我们知道一个知识分子、一个暴发户、一个屠夫、一个老师、一个学生，他们说话都是不同的味道和腔调。语言描写也可能表现出一个人的心理，比如说，一个人讲话结结巴巴，说明他或者紧张，或者心虚，或者害怕等等；最后，语言描写也可以表现出人物的性格，说话大大咧咧口无遮拦的人，一般都开朗外向；说话总是要仔细斟酌的人，必然是谨慎小心的。由此类推，因此，语言是我们了解一个人的要道。
作用： 形象生动地表现出人物的××心理（心情），并反映了人物的××性格特征或××精神品质。有时还推动了情节的发展。
③行动（动作）描写
可以看出一个人的心理、修养等。心理学上说人的心理活动常常会通过一些动作来表现出来，比如说紧张的时候会绞手指，撒谎的时候常常眼神游离等等，从一些细微的细节，我们可以看出一个人当时的心里状态，在《变色龙》里，奥楚蔑洛夫斯基就用脱衣服和穿衣服来掩饰自己出尔反尔的尴尬。为什么说动作描写反映个人修养呢？道理很简单，吃饭乱扒的人和吃饭的时候总是慢条斯理，有章有法的人，个人修养必然不同，叼着烟，翘着二郎腿的和那些危襟正坐的人必然不同。
作用：形象生动地表现出人物的××心理（心情），并反映了人物的××性格特征或××精神品质。推动了情节的发展。
④心理描写
我们下面看一段心理描写：
“刘宁不禁陷入了沉思：到底送不送这个礼呢？送吧，实在是丢人，良心上觉得过不去；不送，孩子升学的事情到底怎么办才好？”
这句话就是心理描写，答题的时候，我们应该把这个心理状态概括出来：这句话属于心理描写，反映了刘宁当时对于是否送礼的矛盾心理。
因此心理描写是写出了人物矛盾/焦虑/担心/喜悦/兴奋的心理。
作用：形象生动地反映出人物的××思想，揭示了人物的××性格或者××品质。
⑤神态描写
可以看出一个人的心理活动；例如“他的脸噌地红了”、“芳芳的眼帘垂得低低的，一颗斗大的泪珠滑落”这样的.句子都属于神态描写，神态的变化可以反观到主人公当时的心理，比如“脸红”这一变化可以反观到“他”当时害羞的心理状态；“眼帘垂得低低的”可以看出芳芳当时的悔恨和懊丧。
⑥环境描写
环境描写可分为自然环境描写和社会环境描写。
自然环境描写，又称景物描写，是对人物活动环境中的自然景物进行的描写。
自然环境描写通常有四种作用：
①渲染某种气氛
②烘托人物性格
③突出中心
④推动故事情节发展。
社会环境描写：从狭义上说，社会环境是指人物活动的处所、背景、氛围等；而从广义上说，是指一定的历史时期的社会生活、人际关系的总和。社会环境描写必须具有鲜明的时代色彩。进行社会环境描写，要努力画好“风俗画”。
