墨子在前往北方齐国的路途中，遇见了一位以卜卦算命为业的陰陽先生。陰陽先生对墨子说：“天帝正好是今天在北方屠*** 黑龙，而先生的皮肤是黑色的，所以千万不要到北方去。”
墨子没有听信陰陽先生的这一套，毅然继续向北前行。可是在到达山东的淄（zi）水南岸后，适逢河水猛涨，无法摆渡，于是只好原路返回。
陰陽先生再次见到墨子时，不无得意地炫耀：“我不早就对您说过嘛，先生不要到北方去。现在的事实果然证明，我的预言是正确的。”
墨子对此不以为然，他反驳说：“现在是南方的人不能到北方去，北方的人也不能到南方来。其实，他们的肤色各不相同，有的黑，有的白，为什么都不能如愿呢？这只是因为淄水猛涨形成了阻隔的缘故啊。况且依照你的理论，天帝每逢甲日乙日在东方屠*** 青龙，逢到丙日丁日就在南方屠*** 赤龙，逢到庚日辛日就在西方屠*** 白龙，逢到壬日癸日就在北方屠*** 黑龙。如此说来，天下之人就都不能出门远行了。这样做，既违背了人的意愿，又将使得天下空虚，一事无成。所以，你的虚妄之言实在是听不得啊！”
墨子用朴素的唯物主义观点批驳了陰陽先生的迷信妄说，这种建立在尊重科学、尊重事实基础上的大无畏精神，是值得学习 和发扬的。
