拿破仑在长期的军旅生活中养成了宽容他人的美德。作为全军统帅，批评士兵的事经常发生，但每次他都不是盛气凌人的，他能很好地照顾士兵的情绪。士兵往往对他的批评欣然接受，而且充满了对他的热爱与感激之情，这大大增强了他的队伍的战斗力和凝聚力，成为欧洲大陆一支劲旅。
在征服意大利的一次战斗中，士兵们都很辛苦。拿破仑夜间巡岗查哨。在巡岗过程中，他发现一名巡岗士兵倚着大树睡着了。他没有喊醒士兵，而是拿起枪替他站起了岗，大约过了半小时，哨兵从沉睡中醒来，他认出了自己的最高统帅，十分惶恐。
拿破仑却不恼怒，他和蔼地对他说：“朋友，这是你的枪，你们艰苦作战，又走了那么长的路，你打瞌睡是可以谅解和宽容的，但是目前，一时的疏忽就可能断送全军。我正好不困，就替你站了一会儿，下次一定小心。”
拿破仑没有破口大骂，没有大声训斥，没有摆出元帅的架子，而是语重心长、和风细雨地批评士兵的错误。有这样大度的元帅，士兵怎能不英勇作战呢？如果拿破仑不宽容士兵，那只能增加士兵的反抗意识，丧失了他本人在士兵中的威信，削弱了队伍的战斗力。
宽容的智慧：
宽容是一种艺术，宽容他人，不是懦弱，更不是无奈的举措。在短暂的生命里学会宽容他人，能使生活中平添许多快乐，使人生更有意义。正因为有了宽容，我们的胸怀才能比天空还宽阔，才能尽容天下难容之事。
