除了勤快、懂事、能吃苦,白雪让母亲骄傲的就是她的倔犟:“她是想做啥事,就一定要做成的那种人。”一次,白雪嚷着要洗头,时值隆冬,烧水要开灶,母亲没理会。白雪也没多说什么,等到夜里家人都睡下,自己从被窝爬起来劈柴点火烧水,硬是痛痛快快洗了个头。
学校开运动会,姐姐回家报告:“咱家老二跑得可快了,男孩都追不上她。”母亲跑去一看,乐了,她还真把跑第二的都套圈了。
去体校是白雪自己提出来的。平日不言不语,心里却特有主意。2002年的一天,她对父亲说:“爸,我要去练长跑,我喜欢这个。”
“我们做爹妈的没什么能耐,孩子从小就吃苦。他们都懂事,没要过啥。我当时想,闺女长这么大,就这一个心愿,一定得帮她。”父亲带着白雪去了齐齐哈尔体校,穿着姐姐的裤子,借了一双球鞋跑了两圈,教练当即拍板:“你把孩子留下吧,保管出成绩!”
教练的话燃起了全家的希望,但每月150元生活费、50元训练费却让父亲犯了愁。家里负债累累,再也没人肯借钱。亲友纷纷劝阻,一个丫头上什么体校,能练出什么名堂,不如下地干活或外出打工,过两年找个人嫁了。白文喜也是犟脾气,他一咬牙,决定去借高利贷。

the summer vacation had come round again. i was happy that i could forget about school at least for a while. lest i fool around all through this summer vacation, i made a plan as to how to spend it. first, i thought i should go over all those things my teachers taught in the previous term so that i could have a better understanding of them.
then i thought i should take up some forms of exercise, such as walking, running and rowing, to keep me physically strong. it stood to reason that with such a good plan i should make the best of my vacation time. i did, because i lived up to what i had planned.
