午门由高高的墩台和巍峨的城楼组成。从正面看有三个门洞，可是走进去转过头再看，却成了五个门洞，这就叫做“明三暗五”。它是过去举行重要典礼的场所，如每年皇帝的颁朔大点就是在午门的这个大广场举行。
从午门往前走一段路，看到的是富丽堂皇的太和门。太和门是紫禁城最大的\'一做门。这里是皇帝上早朝的地方，和大臣们议事的“会议室”。明朝永乐皇帝主持国事就在这里。
