引起近视眼的原因：
一、内因
1、遗传素质：近视眼有一定遗传倾向，已被公认，对高度近视更是如此。但对一般近视，这一倾向就不很明显。有遗传因素者，患病年龄较早，多在6.00D以上。但也有高度近视眼者，无家族史。高度近视眼属常染色体隐性遗传，一般近视眼属多因子遗传病。
2、发育因素：婴儿因眼球较小，故均系远视，但随着年龄的增长，眼轴也逐渐加长，至青春期方发育正常。如发育过度，则形成近视，此种近视称为单纯性近视，多在学龄期开始。一般都低于6.00D。至20岁左右即停止发展。如幼年时进展很快，至15～20岁时进展更速，以后即减慢，这类近视常高于6.00D，可到20D～25D或30D。这种近视称为高度近视或进行性近视或病理性近视。此种近视到晚年可发和退行性变，因此视力可逐渐减退，配镜不能矫正视力。很少在出生时就有近视眼，但有极少数为先天性的。
三、外因 即环境因素，从事文字工作或其他近距离工作的人，近视眼比较多，青少年学生中近视眼也比较多，而且从小学五、六年级开始，其患病率明显上升。这种现象，说明近视眼的发生和发展与近距离工作的关系非常密切。尤其是青少年的眼球，正处于生长发育阶段，调节能力很强，球壁的伸展性也比较大，阅读、收发室等近距离工作时的调节和集合作用，使肯外肌(主要是内直肌对眼球施加一定的压力，眼内压也相应升高，随着作业的不断增加，调节和集合的频度和时间也逐渐增加，睫状肌和眼外肌经常处于高度紧张状态，调节作用的过度发挥可以造成睫状肌痉挛，从而引起一时性的视力减退。但经休息或使用睫状肌糜烂剂后，视力可能改善在完全恢复。因此，有人称这种近视为功能性近视或假性近视。但巩膜组织在眼外肌的长期机械性压迫下，球壁逐渐延伸，眼轴拉长，近视的程度也越来越深，而且不能再被阿托品等所缓解。特别是青少年时期，不注意视觉卫生，是形成近视眼的直接原因。不注意全身健康更能促使近视眼的发展。
最近有人用、“前瞻性研究”的方法，观察“环境与遗传因素在近视患病中所起的作用。”其法为对于原视力正常的学生，在两年后的`随访中对影响近视的各种因素进行分析判断。其结果如在遗传因素方面：父母双方均无近视、一方有近视、双方均有近视的子女中，近视新患病率之比为1∶2.6∶3.8;在环境因素方面：课余阅读时间为1～2h∶3h∶4～5h的近视新患病率之比为1∶2.1∶3.2。因此，遗传和环境是影响学生发生近视的两个重要因素。
另外，从广义上说，大气中微量元素的污染，营养成分的改变和不符合人体工程学要求的教具等，亦为客观因素，且均有影响学生近视发生的报道。但这些因素与看近引起近视相比较，则是次要的。
