传说以前有个叫年的怪兽，它住在海里，头上长着尖尖的角，每到除夕的时候它就会跑去村庄里找人吃。大人、老人、小孩都很怕它，所以人们在这一天都会跑到山上去躲起来。
这一年，有个长着长胡子的老人来到这里，人们忙着上山，村庄一片混乱，谁也没注意到这个老人，只有一个好心的老婆婆给了一点吃的给他，并对他说：“你快走吧！等会年就要来啦！”可谁知到老人听完后说：“不用怕，今晚我就留在你家里，一定把年赶走。”老婆婆劝了半天都没用，只好自个儿走了。晚上，年来到村庄里找人吃，它来到老婆婆家看见门上贴着红对联，突然，从院子里响起了“噼哩啪啦”的响声，吓得年连退了好几步。这时门打开了，只见白胡子老人穿着一身大红袍，站在院子里，屋里开满了灯。年看见了以后，吓得跑走了。人们见了，高兴地跑下了山，问：“白胡子老人，您用了什么发术把年赶走了？”白胡子老人笑了笑说：“我没用什么发术，我只是知道年这个怪兽它怕红色、灯光、响声。所以我贴红对联、穿红衣服、放炮竹。下一次你们也用这样的方法，就一定能把年赶走，
