乡间有一位做父亲的，要给他的两个儿子起名字，又想不与别人的名字相同，叫什么呢？想来想去，给他的大儿子起了个名字叫“盗”，给他的小儿子起名叫“殴”（打人的意思）。
光阴似箭，日月如梭，两个儿子也长大了，都长成“小后生”了。真是人生祸福难料。是福不是祸，是祸躲不过。
有一天，大儿子“盗”要到外地去办事，人已经走出了家门，走到大路上了。老大爷忽然想起了一件事要嘱咐大儿子一声，要把他喊回来，就在后边一面追赶着，一面大声喊：“盗！盗！”
事也凑巧，说巧真是巧，巧得不得了！
恰巧本地官吏巡查要从这大道经过，还要走两里路才向右转弯，走上向东的大路打道回府。轿子正颤颤悠悠地向这边抬过来，他在轿子里坐了将近半个时辰，正想闭目养神打瞌睡。突然听到有人在大声喊叫“盗！盗！”一下子惊醒了，瞌睡也被这突如其来的喊叫声叫跑了。这官吏轻轻拉起轿帘朝叫喊的方向一看：只见一年轻后生在前面急急忙忙地走着，后面有个老大爷向这后生边追赶边大声叫“盗！盗！”
这还了得！太平世界，光天化日之下竟有人还敢行盗窃之事，竟然还是个身强力壮的后生偷盗老头的`财物，简直是太不像话了！于是官吏拉开半边轿门的帘子对身边的护兵下令：“你们快上去把那个正匆匆走着的后生给我抓起来！他是强盗。”
官吏听到老大爷叫喊“盗”，以为老大爷追赶的是强盗，就把“盗”抓住捆了起来。老大爷看到自己的大儿子被官吏误以为是强盗抓住并捆了起来，就想叫二儿子“殴”去向官吏说明实际情况，由于看到情况紧急，心里又着急，一时说不出别的话来，只是一个劲地喊着“殴！殴！”
官吏抓住了老大爷的大儿子“盗”后，不容“盗”分说，让士兵用粗麻绳将“盗”五花大绑绑得紧紧的，然后再带回府衙审问定罪。正准备起轿，又忽地听到老大爷急切地呼喊：“殴！殴！”捆押“盗”的兵士都以为是老大爷示意要打这个年轻的“强盗”，于是乎拳头、木棒雨点般地朝“盗”头上、身上打下来了，要不是老大爷和他的二儿子及时跑到跟前把情况说明，差一点“盗”就被打死了。
