四个人有佛来思节先生引路，到卖项链的老人家中。屋子太简陋，只容得下两个人，佛来思节夫妇就停在房门口。玛蒂尔德走进去，看到已经病得糊涂的老人。

老人又痛苦地闭上眼睛，玛蒂尔德走出去，她看着佛来思节夫人和她脖子上的项链，慢慢地把老人的话和那天所发生的事情告诉佛来思节夫人，佛来思节夫人很感动，玛蒂尔德就把玫瑰递给她，佛来思节夫人似有所悟地点头，然后走进去，路瓦栽先生也走出来，房间里只剩下佛来思节夫人和那个老马车夫。
“老人家，你认得出我是谁吗？”佛来思节夫人柔声说。
老人再度睁开眼睛，看着眼前模糊的美丽脸庞，摇摇头。
佛来思节夫人指着项链又说：“你还认识这是什么吗？”
老人涣散的目光突然集中起来，他低声叫道：“项链？是项链！”
老人又仔细地端详佛来思节夫人，虽然觉得她的脸很陌生，但是却和当时的那个美丽夫人一样的漂亮，老人张大嘴，却发不出声音，只是一张一合地似乎在说话。
佛来思节夫人接着说：“是我，十年前那个搭你马车的人，项链回到我手里，是我的丈夫买回来送给我的，它现在比什么都珍贵。”说到这里，佛来思节夫人回头望一眼在门口的佛来思节先生，佛来思节先生也走进去，带着微笑看着老人。
佛来思节夫人回过头，对老人说：“谢谢你，替我保管这么久，太感谢！和那个夜晚一样，又是鲜花盛开的季节。”
说完，佛来思节夫人就把玫瑰递给老人。
老人接过玫瑰，闭上嘴，也闭上眼睛，从眼角流出眼泪，依稀地说着：“太好！太好！谢谢！谢谢！”
