画眉也叫金画眉，雀形目鹟科画眉亚科。体长约24厘米，上体橄榄褐色,头和1653上背具褐色轴纹，眼圈白，眼上方有清晰的的白色眉纹，下体棕黄色，腹中夹灰色。

体重50～75克。主要生长在我国的江苏、浙江、安徽、湖北、四川、云南、贵州、陕西等地，台湾地区也有，但外表略有不同。

画眉为普遍性留鸟，主要栖息于海拔1000公尺以下之山丘的浓密灌木林中，喜欢在晨昏时于枝头上鸣唱。画眉性格隐匿、胆小，领域性极强，雄鸟性凶好斗。平时只有在秋季才会三五成群的出现，叫声明亮悦耳，为鸣鸟中之佼佼者，常被捕捉饲养而成为笼鸟。由于画眉雄鸟好斗，不少地方都有人训练其打斗观赏，甚至赌博。

画眉鸟食性杂，以水果，浆果，种子及昆虫为主食，笼养画眉的饲料主要是蛋炒米和适当的菜叶和昆虫。每年春夏季节开始繁衍后代，一窝约产3至6枚卵。
