又有一天，国王吃水果时不小心切掉了小拇指，又问：“宰相啊！你说断指是好事还是坏事啊？”宰相说：“好事！”于是，国王大怒，将宰相关入地牢，自己独自去打猎了，不想误中土人陷阱被捉，好在因为不是全人（缺手指），免去被吃掉的恶运。
死里逃生的国王回想起宰相的好，赶紧回宫将宰相从地牢放出来，又问宰相：“我把你关在地牢里好不好啊？”宰相又答：“好！好极了！要不是陛下将微臣关在地牢，微臣恐怕就陪陛下打猎被捉，被土人吃掉了……”

好几年过去了，纳粹党上台执政。这一天，传教士与村中所有的人，被纳粹党集中起来，送往集中营。在下火车、列队前行的时候，有一个手拿指挥棒的指挥官，在前面挥动着棒子，叫道：“左，右。”被指向左边的是死路一条，被指向右边的则还有生还的机会。传教士的名字被这位指挥官点到了，他浑身颤抖，走上前去。当他无望地抬起头来，眼睛一下子和指挥官的眼睛相遇了。传教士习惯的脱口而出：“早安，米勒先生。”米勒先生虽然没有过多地表情变化，但仍禁不住还了一句问候：“早安。”声音低得只有他们两人才能听到。最后的结果是：传教士被指向了右边---意思是生还者。
