16世纪末，英国女王伊丽莎白一世打算派最亲密的顾问罗伯特·塞西尔去各地巡视。为了保障他的安全，女王决定从王宫众多卫士中挑选出一位最得力的人。
那天，上千名体形剽悍、武艺高强的卫士聚集在伦敦威斯敏斯特教堂前的广场上，他们摩拳擦掌，跃跃欲试，都渴望好运能降临到自己头上。伊丽莎白一世环视着大家，走到队伍前面，示意紧随其后的塞西尔自行去挑选。塞西尔走到队伍中，他拍了这个的胸脯强壮有力，拧了那个的胳膊结实有劲，感觉都很满意，半天拿不定主意。
“还是由我来考考他们吧。”伊丽莎白一世略显不耐烦地说道，然后轻咳了一声。
顷刻间，上百匹脱缰的骏马从远处奔腾而来。女王指着它们，大声说：“我的勇士，你们表现的机会到了，快去征服那些发疯的骏马吧!”
没一会儿，上百匹骏马就被一个个奋不顾身的卫士制服了，只是因为人多马少，每匹马的前后左右都被七八名卫士牢牢围着，没有哪个肯远离半步。
女王看到此景，不禁迟疑地说：“马是大家合力拦住的，我该判定谁才是真正的勇士呢?”
她转过身，发现有名卫士一直守护在塞西尔身旁，于是惊讶地问：“你怎么没去拦截马匹?难道你不想当勇士吗?”
那名卫士摇了摇头，严肃地答道：“我保护住了主人的安全，便是真正的勇士。”
女王笑了，对塞西尔说：“他就是你那位最合适的人选!”
真正的能者，并非时时处处都逞强争胜，而是能首先做好自己的分内事。
