过了一会儿，天上飞来一只乌鸦。大蜀鸡知道乌鸦平素只以树上的野果、田里的谷物和昆虫为食，性情不像鹞鹰那般凶猛，所以丝毫没有防范。它让乌鸦飞落到院子里和自己做伴，与小鸡一块啄食、玩耍。大约有一顿饭的工夫，大蜀鸡与乌鸦和睦相处，简直像亲兄弟一样。然而好景不长，当大蜀鸡完全丧失警惕、痴心陶醉在这天伦之乐中的时候，乌鸦猛然间用长长的大嘴巴叼了一只小鸡。然后，它用双脚使劲往地上一蹬，狠狠地扇了扇翅膀，一阵风似地飞走了。
大蜀鸡惊魂未定地站在尘土飞扬的院子里，呆呆地望着乌鸦渐渐远去的身影，感到心痛万分。它对于自己因判断错误而受乌鸦欺骗，从而导致亲生骨肉转瞬间惨遭横祸的严重过失懊丧不已。
这则寓言通过大蜀鸡丧子的失误告诉人们，狡猾隐蔽的敌人不仅像凶残露骨的敌人一样可恨，而且更难防范。
