有一次，狐狸在鸡舍缝钻出去，后果是十分严重的。
想到这，狐狸决定只吃半只鸡，这样就没有什么危险了。不一会儿，狐狸将半只鸡吃进了肚子。它停住了嘴。可是，望着剩下的那半只肥鸡，狐狸实在不甘心，鸡真是太香了。于是，它对自己说，还是再吃几口吧，反正多吃几口也无关紧要。
几口肥肉下了肚，狐狸准备原路返回。此时，外面有了响声，狐狸心想，肯定是鸡的主人出来察看，等一会儿再出去吧。
时间静静地流淌，外面没有了响声。狐狸觉得此时安全了，它准备逃走。可是，它刚到鸡舍的门缝旁便停住了，它思忖，这只鸡就差一点就吃完了，丢下了太可惜了，吃完再想办法出去吧。于是，狐狸三下五除二便把最后一部分鸡肉给吃光了。
狐狸打算离开。当它再次来到门缝旁时，发现自己出不去了。它费了很大的力气，还是无济于事。
它害怕了，狠狠地打了自己几个嘴巴。心里说，就怪这张贪吃的.嘴，现在面临着生命危险，这可如何是好。狐狸如热锅上的蚂蚁，但是无计可施。
天亮了。狐狸悄悄待在鸡舍里，尽量避免被鸡的主人发现。鸡的主人没有发现鸡舍中的异常情况，他像往常一样打开了鸡舍的门。狐狸发现逃生的机会来了，于是猛地向外面窜了出去，头也不回地逃跑了。
回到洞穴以后，狐狸惊魂未定。它想，假如鸡的主人发现自己待在鸡舍里，那自己肯定就没命了。这次逃脱，可以说是侥幸，侥幸是靠不住的。它警告自己，要汲取这次教训，再也不能拿性命开玩笑了。
有一天，狐狸又进了那家鸡舍。办法与上次相同，狐狸又逮住了一只肥鸡。狐狸告诫自己，千万不要犯上次的错误。它开始吃鸡，很快它就吃掉了鸡的一半。它知道，这是它安全的界限，超过了这个界限，它还会像上次一样被困在鸡舍里。那么就会有性命之虞。但是，剩下的半只鸡对它吸引力实在太大了，弄得它十分痛苦。想想看，让狐狸放弃它爱吃的鸡，那是一件多么不容易的事情呀。
狐狸决定守在这半只鸡旁，寻找一种两全其美的办法。过了许久，狐狸感觉自己的肚子小了许多。它想，也许先吃掉的半只鸡已经被消化。于是，它决定每吃一口便到鸡舍的门缝旁试一试，待觉得出去没有问题，便吃下一口。试了许多次，狐狸都能平安地出去。后来，狐狸觉得这样下去是过于胆小了，也许吃了整只鸡也不会出问题。于是，它放开了肚皮，把剩下的鸡肉全都吃光了。
当它打算离开的时候，它发现自己像上次一样，又出不去了。它又如上次一样，狠狠地打了自己几个嘴巴，心里说，又是贪吃惹的祸。也许，这次不会像上次那样幸运了。上次鸡舍的主人发现有鸡被偷吃，一定会有所防范的。它心急如焚，但什么办法也没有，只能等待命运的安排了。
太阳从山边露出了头，农人打开了鸡舍的门。狐狸心想，逃跑的机会又来了。于是，它迫不及待地向外面窜了出去。可是，它一下子落入了鸡主人准备好的袋子里。鸡主人狠狠地将袋子摔在了地上，狐狸感到五脏六腑都被摔碎了，但是它强忍着疼痛，一动也不动，以此来迷惑农人。农人发现狐狸不动了，以为它死了。于是，从袋子中将它抓了出来，放在了地上。狐狸心中一阵狂喜，它猛地跃起身来，又一次逃脱了。
从此以后，狐狸许多天都没有去农人家的鸡舍偷鸡。
有一天，狐狸实在馋得不行了，它决定再到那家鸡舍偷鸡吃。它在临走时,对自己约法三章。因为它知道,自己侥幸逃脱了两次,如果第三次被困在鸡舍里,也许就没命了。狐狸很熟练地进了那家鸡舍,如愿以偿地逮住一只肥鸡。可是,不论狐狸如何警告自己,它却又犯了与以前一样的错误。
有道是：事不过三。这次狐狸并没有延续它的好运气,它落入了鸡主人的手中,并被剥了皮。
鸡主人瞧着狐狸的皮,自言自语地说：“贪心不除,再聪明的大脑也是无用的。”
