苏霍姆林斯基在他的建议中不止一次地论述过“手”对于一个人思维的促进关系，给教师的一百条建议读后感(朱育文。在第28条建议中，苏霍姆林斯基即给我们指出：儿童的智慧是在手指尖上的。在第40条“动手和智慧”中，苏霍姆林斯基进一步阐述了他关于劳动促进智育的观点。
在这一条建议里，他又一次提出了要让孩子多从事一些动手的劳动，培养他们的动手能力。当然，他在这里的动手可不是一般的、随便的劳动，就像体力劳动不能代替体育锻炼一样，那些不需要任何技巧与动脑的动手劳动，对思维的促进是没有什么帮助的“他们的双手只不过是一种发出体力劳动能量的器官，而远非一种创造的工具”针对许多老师（包括家长）总担心孩子从事劳动而耽误了宝贵学习时间的情况，他说：双手无所事事，像不假思索地随便找点体力负担给学生让他有事可干一样，这两种做法对于少年的智力发展是同样有害的。他说，在人的大脑里，有一些特殊的、最积极的、最富创造性的区域，依靠把抽象思维跟双手的精细的、灵巧的动作结合起来，就能激发这些区域积极活跃起来。如果没有这种结合，那么大离的这些区域就处理沉睡状态。在间年和少年时期，如果没有把这些区域的活力激发起来，那么它们就永远不会觉醒了。为此，他主张从一年级开始，就要求学生的双手能做出准确的、有成效的动作。手能教给思维以精确性、工整性和明确性。通过孩子们动手，使他们了解了各种事物之间的关系，锻炼了他们的思维，发展了他们的观察能力和推测能力。
