天似镜，风如纱，竹涛阵阵，流水综综（淙淙）。正是个好日子，李白与阮籍同到神的脚下寻找快乐幸福之门。
神睁大眼睛看这两个人：李白，腰挂酒葫芦，身着白青纱，胯下小毛驴，顶上飘飘发，不时用手抚一下那长长的山羊须；阮籍，坐在只眼老牛的破车上，酒瓶东倒西歪，头发凌乱如草，衣服上半只扣子也没有，用一支树枝挂住，潦倒非常。
神引他们进了一个房间，各给他们一只破耳壶，壶中装有半壶酒。阮籍摇一摇又往壶里看一眼，叹气道：“神怕是偏心这西域浪子，我只有半壶酒罢，他却有一壶吧！”李白笑了笑：“神看来是对我们很好呢，我有大半壶仙酒，喝，味道一定美极了！”
神饶有兴趣地看了两人一阵子，微微一笑，把他们带到一个分叉路口，让他们各自走去。
李白的路不好走。赖棘刺丛生漫路，泥淖的山石路让小毛驴弄伤了脚，他从驴身上落到了泥水中，青白衫顿时一片黄一片黑，鸟儿从树丛中惊飞。他哈哈一笑：“这回酒可醒了，可以好好走路，再说，八只脚总比四只跑得快。”他又呷了一口酒。走了不久去碰到断崖，无路可走了。他吟了一句：“无生我材必有用，千金散尽还复来”。小毛驴，你可不必受我压迫了，有缘再会”！说罢动手往山下攀爬。
阮籍也不如意。正当他看着那半壶仙酒叹气时，一只猴子抢走了他用来遮风挡雨的破帽子，他想抢回来，却打翻了大多半的酒，人也倒在路旁，棘刺刮破了皮肉，鲜血直流。他又叹：“唉！天不助我呀！”爬上车走未几刻，断崖在眼前出现了。他顿时悲从中来，忆起伤心往事，哭天抢地地喊了起来：“叫我如何是好，如何是好……”眼前一黑，他晕倒在车上。
李白历遍艰辛，终于爬到了山下，眼前是一片从未见过的美好境地；金色的树枝，宝石的果子，银白的叶片，云雾缭绕，花影丛丛，神正笑着对阮籍说些什么，他跑了过去。
神于是宣判他们寻找的结果。点了点他们的酒壶，一阵红光闪过，两人手中多了一把钥匙，一把刻着“悲观”，另一把刻着“乐观”，李白成功地打开了门，而阮籍，无语叹息。
神笑着说：“乐观就是劈（披）荆斩刺的一把刀，悲欢则是阻道的石。你们也看到了各自的结果，乐观，则幸福快乐，悲观，则无所事成。”
顿时，两人心中，风清气爽，豁然开朗。
