杨柳这个名字来自隋炀帝。当年隋炀帝下令开凿通济渠，虞世基建议在堤岸种柳，隋炀帝予以采纳，并亲自栽植，御书赐柳树姓杨，享受与帝王同姓之殊荣，从此
柳树便有了“杨柳”之美称。柳，谐音“留”，古人有临别之际折柳相赠的美意，这个习俗流传了千年，并未在历史的长河中销声匿迹，比之千年之后的流水宴，有过之而无不及。你看，总有一瞬间，我们与古人心意相通，闭上眼睛，那河畔折柳依依惜别的情景仿佛就在眼前，我们的先人，用这样淳朴美好的方式寄托着情思和不舍，难怪直到今天依旧被传为美谈。
柳以无性繁殖为主，古语有云，“无心插柳柳成荫”，柳树依靠其无与伦比的适应性成为我国古往今来国土绿化最普遍的树种之一。许许多多的须根深深地扎进泥土里，伸向四面八方，紧紧地拥抱大地，为主干提供充足的营养。柳树没有松树的伟岸挺拔，也不像杨树那样正直不屈，它的主干通常在二三米处就长出分枝。柳叶是单叶互生，叶片狭长但宽室相宜，形如少女细长的眉毛，正如“芙蓉如面柳如眉”。
柳树材质轻，易切削，干燥后不变形，无特殊气味，可供建筑、坑木用材，可制作箱板和火柴梗等；木材纤维含量高，是造纸和人造棉的原料；柳木、柳枝是很好的薪炭材；柳条可编筐、箱、帽等，柳叶可作羊、马等的饲料。柳树还是一种优美的观赏树种。柳树皮还可以入药，具有解热镇痛的神奇功效。

随着工业时代的来临，人类科学技术水平的不断提高，人与自然的关系发生了逆转，人成了强者，而“温和的自然”却成了容易受伤的对象。高科技既给我们的生活提供极大的方便，也给我们带来了忧虑——环境污染。地球一次次在给人类提醒：“保护环境，为我们传造一个美丽的家园！”
1、高度提纯的化学制剂，如***虫剂、油漆、洗涤剂等对自然环境构成了重大威胁。如油漆，油漆材料中含有各种溶剂苯、二甲苯，硝基漆中稀释剂乙醇、丁醇等亦有毒施工中挥发出现溶剂蒸气，浓度高时对人体神经有较严重刺激和危害性。低浓度时也有头痛、恶心、疲劳和腹痛等现象。在长期接触中会使食欲减退，损坏造血系统，发生慢性中毒。但是只要注意加强防护，尽量防止油漆接触皮肤，如有可能要多加开窗通风及早让室内空气散发。
2、卫生条件的改善使人口急剧增加，人类活动大量破坏了地球的森林和湿地资源。世界人口增长率的急剧上升和人口基数呈指数增长的现状。其重要标志为：人口翻番的时间越来越短，世界人口从5亿增到10亿用了200余年；从10亿增至20亿用了100多年，从20亿到40亿不到70年，估计再翻一番只需35年。本世纪人口在每10年间的增长数也在上升。近代人口迅速增长的原因是：生活条件和医疗技术全面改善，死亡率下降，人类平均寿命不断提高。目前世界人口有50%在25岁以下，这种年龄结构属于典型的增长型，它决定人口在今后相当长时期内保持增长势头。由于地球的空间和资源都有限，控制人口实为刻不容缓的任务。目前，全球荒漠化土地面积已经达到3600万平方千米，占陆地总面积的1/4，而且每年仍以5万～7万平方千米的速度在扩展。这个“杰作”的创造者是人类。
于是，“温和的自然”变为“凶恶的自然”，人类施加给它的，它最终都要归还人类。人类均供水自1970年来开始减少，而且持续下降。目前60%的大陆面临淡水资源不足，100多个国家严重缺水，其中缺水十分严重的国家达40多个。预计未来20年，全球人均供水将减少1/3。石油资源一旦枯竭，人类的生活质量和社会的正常运转必定遇到问题：人类消耗石化燃料，如石油、煤炭、天然气等，造成大气中二氧升高。由于温室效应的影响，北极地区的冰盖已减少了42%。近100年来海洋面上升了50厘米。如果温室效应继续下去，海洋面在上升50厘米，全球30%的人口就得迁移……
如果人类持续现在的行为而不做任何改变，那么到21世纪结束的时候，地球上的物种会减少一半。那么到了最后，受伤害的终归于地球的破坏者——人类。
我们只有一个地球，这是人类赖以生存的唯一家园。与自然和谐相处，共同发展，是我们共同的心愿。让我们擦干地球爷爷的泪水，联合起来，保护地球吧！
