上述提到，关于外国文学的发展历程、不同文学流派之间的风格、作家作品简介、作品创作背景、作品人物性格和艺术成就等，老师虽然要讲授，但不能面面俱到，也不要讲得过于详细，得让学生自己去了解。如果学生不去了解怎么办？教师可以采取课堂演讲法进行解决。笔者采用两种方式落实。一是把全班同学分成若干组，每组至少阅读一部名著，利用课前十分钟进行介绍，成员分工合作，重点谈感悟；二是每位同学至少阅读五部名著，每次课留出20分钟左右的时间，让学生按顺序进行演讲。这样就能够尽可能地促使学生阅读外国文学作品，而有些没有阅读过的作品也可以通过分享其他同学的演讲予以了解。在这个活动中，大多数同学都认真对待，积极查阅资料，总结他人观点，思考自己所得，收获很大，而且提炼出不少新的观点。例如，有同学认为莎士比亚《威尼斯商人》中的夏洛克不应该作为批判对象。因为他是一个被歧视的犹太人，是一个受害者，而安东尼等人违背协议，是一种不遵守契约精神的体现，该批判的是安东尼等人而不是夏洛克。还有同学说歌德的《浮士德》这部作品虽然体现了浮士德积极追求的一面，但并非永无止境地追求，体现也并不强烈，相反在他身上体现了不少消极享乐的思想和行为，如浮士德有自***倾向；贪图肉体的快乐，对玛甘泪不负责任；帮助皇帝发行纸币导致通货膨胀，对老百姓是一种劫难；异想天开地和古希腊美女海伦结合，也是享乐思想作祟；最后移山填海，破坏大自然，坑害老百姓，更是罪不可恕。观点不一而足，虽然有些值得商榷，但也颇有道理。而在这样的氛围中，教学的目的也就基本上达到了。
