想要进这样的学校，要么学习成绩非常好。要么成绩稍微差一点点，但是有其他特长非常强。可以偏科，但是得足够偏。如果面试时说自己要获得了什么奖项，必须是全国性的大奖，小提琴要是国际水平，体育特长得达到奥运冠军的水平，虽然你的大学先修课不是特别的出类拔萃，但也得比绝大多数人要优秀。这样招生办才对你大学能顺利毕业有信心。
为了上哈耶普这样的名校，家境可比素质要重要。因为历史上这些名校都是由上层精英出钱资助建立的。学校建立的目的`就是为了让彼此的孩子能够建立关系，等以后孩子毕业可以继承家产。常青藤建立之初，一些年来都不招平民子弟的。他们采取的措施是要求会希腊语和拉丁文。但是美国的普通高中根本不会教这些课程。这就相当于变相使用技术手段，把普通学生排除在外。
