到底什么才是文学？文学本身又有着怎样的责任？
无疑，文学是一种从时间尺度上评价及记录先进思想的一种手段。它依靠个人感觉与来展现一种时间与空间的结合体，并对其中人的状态、命运进行认知、思考、判断与描述，并在其范围内寻求一种美的极至。而文学本身，理应对其涉及到的广大民众及后世读者负责。它的责任，便是作者要凭借心灵的感悟与想像向读者展现一个有意义的框架。
然而现时却出现了这样一个尴尬境地，所谓的有影响力的文学作品，不过是在大众庸俗品味下对文学作出裁决而产生的\'畅销书的罗列。这也就使得在空间上取得特权的作品在时间上越发短命。于是，书屋内的辉煌情景竟成了一种笑柄。繁荣不过是荒芜的另一种体现。
这个年代，灯红酒绿的年代，随波逐流的年代。韩寒、郭敬明大行其道，《史记》《世说》却无人问津；女性对可爱淘如数家珍，却不知道嵇康、尼采这样神祗的存在；庸碌的我们忙于应付高考模式，习惯了千篇一律，完全被动，却忘却了文学最初的模样，本身的责任。文学本应是最具创造力且最具个性化的个体，然而，当文学沦落为金钱名誉的附属，那责任又从何谈起呢？
我们怀念说出“写作是孤独的”的海明威，怀念瓦尔登湖畔沉思的梭罗，怀念狱中***却永不言弃的司马迁，怀念心怀天下饿死孤舟的杜甫，怀念勇于改错的巴金，怀念一生潦倒的卡夫卡，怀念“生活在别处”的昆德拉，怀念语言细腻色调阴暗的杜拉斯……文学本来就是这个样子，给人启迪，发人深思；而这本来就是文学应负的责任。可身在发达社会的我们，竟没有前人看得清楚，这是怎样的一种悲哀呢？
面对这仓皇的一切，陶渊明隐退了，鲁迅沉默了。或许只因为他们清楚手中这杆纤弱的笔承载了多重的责任，有着怎样石破天惊的力量，才宁愿生在那个动乱却有着人的觉醒的年代。
而悲哀的我们却只能卑微地活在虚伪中，日复一日，年复一年。
